Man I really need a multi core CPU. Cant do much on this puny 2.0Ghz 3200+ Looking at a nice Visionman PC on Tigerdirect, just under $2k, dual core. Probalby could build something cheaper myself ( a lot of that cost is the video card GF 8800)

Go with an AMD X2 for now. When AMD Quad come out later this year, UPGRADE.

@Zoomer30. have tryed a AMD 64 3800+ before. well im using one and it even out run most P4 and duos look at this information AMD 64 --- Measured floating point speed 2396.34 million ops/sec --- Measured integer speed 4302.16 million ops/sec . part 1

@zoomer, clock 4 clock u want core 2 duo. I have built latest 3 for under $600 AU each. O'clock by 50% and run 64bit kubuntu, and you'll get 2-2.5K/ day per box.

@Veebee: what are some linux stability tools, like an equivalent Prime95, SuperPi & StressCPU? I spend time in Mint these days but dont know a way to monitor temps & stability

Are there any projects that have both a very small memory footprint and a very short WU time? I'm looking to set up some slower computers with not much memory.

i use xlab, and chess currently, think Prime Grid and VTU should work too. Have same prob with an oooold Mac G3

That used to be seti but they have started producing larger work units. I think if you set your prefs right you can get only the little ones.

Jorick, APS from Manchester Uni is ideal for older computers. There's no minimum CPU or memory requirement. But at this moment they're out of WUs.

Primgrid is taking ~13m on my celeronM420-1.6gig laptop, and is using less than 30mg of ram.

PrimeGrid and chess are all short. Unfortunately no LLR app for Linux on Primegrid.
