2025-11-08: SRBase, server restart (done)

It is a bad timing. I need to restart the server shortly. There is a problem with the Norton security. It will be removed next year. In summary, ucrtbase.dll crashed the Norton service and blocked all the internet connections. The problem is known but it was the 3rd time now. Because of the VM and ubuntu you still can connecting to the project and website.

You may have noticed, we were down for about 24 hours.

Turned out to be nothing serious. For those interested in the details, read on...
Someone in the department (not me) did a remote reboot of the server and it did not come back up. They had to send someone into the server room to manually boot it. Then there was a network problem that took a while to diagnose. I was told the connection was changed to static so they had to change some network settings to make it work.

2025-10-03: LODA, 140,000 Programs Milestone Reached

We are excited to announce that the LODA BOINC project has reached an significant milestone: over 140,000 programs discovered! This marks a major advancement in our mission to automatically generate programs for integer sequences from the OEIS. Thanks to your support, we now have program coverage for entire classes of sequences that previously had no program coverage at all.

We have launched a public API that enables programmatic access to the LODA database, allowing developers and researchers to query, analyze, and work with LODA programs at scale. Our new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server integration now allows AI chatbots to interact directly with LODA. Users can analyze integer sequences, execute LODA programs, and even submit new programs using conversational AI interfaces.

The Top Users page has been improved to better highlight your contributions, now featuring an additional column showing the number of programs mined by each user.

The host system stopped any internet connections but the server VM was still working.
After a restart all is back to normal, strange things which cannot be explained.

Introducing Foldit Education Mode v2 on the Web

In 2020, as the pandemic set in and classes moved online, the Foldit team realized they had a tremendous opportunity to help the science education community that was desperate for good science learning tools. They therefore created and released Foldit Education Mode in August 2020 as a ready-made teaching tool for biochemistry that instructors could use easily and freely in their courses. In the past five years, at least hundreds of educators and many thousands of students have used Foldit Education Mode.

While Foldit Education Mode was greatly successful at meeting the challenge of the moment, it still had flaws that would hold some students back from using it. The Foldit team also recently published a quantitative assessment of learning with Foldit Education Mode (https://doi.org/10.1002/bmb.21906), and while it was fulfilling its purpose, there was definitely also room to improve.

That?s why they're very excited to introduce their second release of Foldit Education Mode with improved levels and teaching tools, but even more excitingly: now available on the web! This means no more downloads required, and compatibility with any computer type. For many, this will enable use of Foldit in the classroom that was never previously possible, and for many more a great degree of increased flexibility and improved user experience.

To play Foldit Education Mode on the web, please go to https://play.fold.it/, and you can start playing immediately! You?ll notice several updates to the user interface along with the new and improved puzzles. The number of puzzles is slightly larger, but this change was largely made to break up levels that had too much biochemistry and gameplay content all rolled together, and by separating it out, the learning experience becomes considerably easier.

In the long term, the Foldit team plans to explore the possibility of hosting smaller Science puzzles to help bridge the gap for new players who start with the web version, but that will require more work to complete. In the meantime, they hope that educators and students worldwide will enjoy the new and improved experience, and those who couldn?t participate before will now be able to.

As always, the Foldit team would appreciate finding out who is using Foldit Education Mode, as they don?t collect that data; it really helps with procuring more funding to support these efforts. So if you do use it, please drop them a line at mail.fold.it@gmail.com.

Just returned from last weekend's MakerFaire in Hannover, where our team presented the latest developments of the Rechenkraft.net HoloDeck project at booth #156 in the Eilenriedehalle: An OpenSource molecular AugmentedReality environment based on the TiltFive board gaming hardware to visualize biomolecules (or any other #3D object available in .glTF file format) for educational or research purposes.

Importantly, this system allows us to visualize work unit files of several chemistry, life science and biomedical distributed computing projects as for example Rosetta@home, SiDock@home, and many more.
Our project was one of only seven projects featured on the MakerFaire's special announcement webpage and, as a consequence, a lot of people came visiting out booth.

We posted a few brief reports and several images from the HoloDeck booth on LinkedIn, Bluesky and Mastodon for you to get an impression on what was going on.

Thanks to the entire team for helping to put this into practice and also to the many RNA World and Rechenkraft.net supporters and to the Einstein@home team who celebrated their 20th anniversary at the MakerFaire booth #157 right next to ours.
It should also be noted that the Justus Liebig University in Giessen currently funds the development of a course which utilizes HoloDeck for teaching and research purposes.

2025-08-02: BOINC, New Administrators

As is now well known, I am ill and my future is very uncertain. Due to my illness, I also experience a lot of pain and am often tired, which sometimes makes me less motivated to work on BOINCstats. Several dedicated BOINCers have offered to continue BOINCstats. I am truly very happy about this; I would not want my end to also mean the end of BOINCstats.

Of course, I will remain involved with BOINCstats myself for as long as possible.

These new administrators are gemini8, Lukas, yoyo_rkn, Walli, and DeleteNull.

Thank you very much. I am convinced that with this team, BOINCstats has a bright future ahead.
