I also think about his over-reactions. But you know he is the admin. He makes rules. We just have to obey, or never access to that site. We have a choice. Do we need more ? What is our rights and what is the admin's rights ?
I wondered much some people wrote to ask to leave p@h, who still creating a new account for writing in the forum, and then creating a team. What's wrong ? I don't know what has been done at p@h recently. Onw wrote in the other forum that a member put large image file(s) to make fora not readable. If it were true, did dlb make wrong decision this time ? If it were false, still did dlb make a wrong decision ? If I were him, I would ask some people to leave quietly.

If there was really a member of the last BFL team that "put large image file(s) to make fora not readable" the admin must not have deleted the team as a whole!

Also I have left the project quietly. I just joined the BFL team at the point when I decided to never come back and crunch for P@H anymore.

But I still would like to see my account with my credits restored there. I have earned them in a time long before all this mess started.

I also have other projects in my BOINCstats overview I'm currently not crunching for, but the credits are still shown and they do count. So why not P@H?

I can explain you how, as I have one of them. We're crunching some 90,000+ Predictor results on 4 Linux clusters. They needed to be done quickly, while if Predictor was waiting for all of them to be done on the handful of Linux machines out there, it would take some 3 years or more before they all got validated, and people who did them wouldn't get credit before that. So we're just running them in a hurry.

I was asked if I wanted to help out and not expecting to get 80 Xeon's with 4 CPUs and 4GB I said yes. They'll be taken away from me after this run and I can't use them anywhere else.

That is what I want too. To ask for leaving quitely and to delete whole teams just without informing them is a very big difference!

That's your wish (and my hope), but you failed to understand "his" wish. That's why this whole incidents happened...

I don't think that the 'bad apples' news announcement could be on the front page of Predictor@Home without the agreement of the main people at Predictor. The statement is astonishing and unprecedented for a boinc project, but it looks very official indeed.

Whether or not the Scripps Institute as a whole is aware of what has been happening at Predictor for a long time now is an unanswered question.

Predictor crunchers cannot be 'spoken to' unless they visit their forum or another forum such as this where the situation has been discussed. Only the server and the project administrators have access to email addresses. As we know, many crunchers rarely visit the forums and much of the time remain incommunicado. This is how boinc was designed. We cannot change this and should not try. Boinc is open-access for projects. Crunchers remain private at home.

Team leaders are of course at liberty to contact their members.

On the other hand, the discussions about events and attitudes at Predictor have been so widespread and longlasting that any internet search for 'Scripps' or 'Predictor' must necessarily reveal the many problems and concerns. Whether P@H and the Scripps Institute will feel obliged to deal with this abnormal situation is another doubtful question.

I am sure that Willi here at Boincstats is aware of this thread. He and his moderators have been very generous in keeping this discussion open. Bearing in mind their continued hospitality I think the best idea is to let them decide for themselves what Boincstats should do. I don't think we should try to put them under pressure.

As the number of boinc projects grows, we may need to get used to the idea of investigating the reputation and characteristics of projects before attaching to them.

you get yet another exciting opportunity to read them all, albeit in hopelessly broken bits and pieces. Even the verse of which you were one of the intended recipients. What I find so regrettable is that so many of the mostly reasonable posts surrounding my own do appear to have gone for good.

What has changed since then is that the administration at Predictor, far from seeking a conciliatory solution to the longstanding problems on that forum, has allowed the situation to escalate even further with the further wave of bannings and the blanket accusations on the Predictor front page news. Almost everyone is quite naturally reacting to these changed circumstances.


Could I stress that in this whole thread I have posted as a private cruncher. In no way should my posts be considered to represent my main project which is cpdn.

I have no doubt that staff at P@H and Scripps Institute know and have no problem with that.

I have seen correct and wrong uses of the word "hacker"*, but THIS is absolutely ridiculous.

The work 'hacking' in the announcement on the P@H front page apparently does not refer to posts expressing disagreement or protest. On 15 May Jorden said it referred to more than one massive spam attack.

In regard of that thread, and with the mass-deletion of random accounts, I think this project should be scaped from the stats sites, as it is unreliable and it doesn't adhere to the BOINC credit system.

The status quo ante should be restored and the project should be put in the retired area.

I support this proposal. It looks like this project is not reliable in several ways!
