Is there a way to suspend network activity for a single project? I have other projects that are crunching and need the network.

Namely Einstein, since I have a couple of results to send back but don't like the attempts to upload every couple hours or so. Who knows how long this outage will last, and I keep a pretty good eye on when servers/projects are up/down. Suspending the project itself won't suspend it's network activity, it just won't ask for/crunch work. I know it doesn't take up bandwidth or anything, but it does populate the messages pane with failed upload messages.

I could set project independent prefs to "only use network between..." and not update prefs through BAM! (but Einstein is down so that won't work anyway) but I'm looking for a solution to implement in the BOINC Manager.

I didn't find anything here at BOINCstats forum. Or is this a feature in the works for a future release of BOINC? I'm using 5.4.11, WinXP. Thanks for any feedback.

As far as I know, suspending a project suspends network activity AND computing. If it doesn't, I'd call it a bug.

...suspending a project suspends network activity AND computing...

That's what I thought before, too.

Here's some more details of what has happened:
Einstein went down, then my host finished two WUs and attempted to upload them (and a third was "ready to report" ). It couldn't so BOINC did it's thing with the increasing "back off" times. The project has deferred communication for a week, but the uploads keep trying every couple of hours.

In the Tasks tab, even with Einstein suspended in Projects tab, there is no indication of a suspended project if the status is "Ready to report" or "Uploading" while other tasks show a "Project suspended by user" in the status column.

From what I can tell, BOINC doesn't care if a project is suspended or not when it comes to finished results, they will ALWAYS be attempted to be uploaded. By suspending a project, that project will not want work, so BOINC will not ask for work, so inherently there won't be any network activity. But for network activity the other way there's nothing stopping it, unless you choke the entire machine.

Code:
1/3/2007 11:26:36 AM||Rescheduling CPU: project suspended by user
1/3/2007 11:30:17 AM|Einstein@Home|Started upload of file h1_0365.5_S5R1__18904_S5R1a_0_0
1/3/2007 11:30:18 AM|Einstein@Home|Temporarily failed upload of h1_0365.5_S5R1__18904_S5R1a_0_0: HTTP file not found
1/3/2007 11:30:18 AM|Einstein@Home|Backing off 3 hours, 13 minutes and 39 seconds on upload of file h1_0365.5_S5R1__18904_S5R1a_0_0

The way it's both been explained to me, and my own experience, is that when you update the General prefs at one project, they migrate to the other projects. It seems the same with host venue, even though I have one machine showing as "work" on every project, and "home on just one project. (Can't seem to stop it,even from the project's website.)

I've kinda wanted this same idea, but I don't know if it's possible. I've also wanted a way to control remote hosts, like you can with local hosts and the BOINC manager. (ie. stopping getting new work, suspending a project, etc.)

We already have the global_prefs_override.xml file, it would be nice to have a project_prefs_override file too.

BOINC Manager can very well connect to a remote host. You need to set up a password on the remote host (gui_rpc_auth.cfg) and a list of hosts allowed to connect (remote_hosts.cfg). See Authorizing remote control of BOINC for more info. Don't forget to open RPC port 31416 (easy to remember, it's Pi) on the firewall/router.

My apologies, I forgot about that.
