My first estimate places the server around €3600 if we do not receive hardware donations.

This includes:

• AMD Opteron 6134
  
• ASUS KGPE-D16/IKVM
  
• Kingston ValueRAM 8 GB ECC Registered DDR3-1066 KVR1066D3D8R7SK2/8G (2x)
  
• Adaptec RAID 5805
  
• SSD drives (brand/type to be determined) 8x

• Several items to put it all together
  

Ideally, the CPU should be two instead of one, which then also needs double the memory, but that adds another €800.

The "old" server will be repaired if possible and then put back into action as challenge server.

The donation window is open.

Let's make this happen before the old server rolls over and dies.

I sent a donation yesterday

I donated for the new server not too long ago for 3 reasons:
1) Willy works tirelessly on maintaining this site and keeping us loaded with our stats.
2) I enjoy this site and visit quite often to view statistics and catch up on all the project news and forum gab.
3) I do not want to see this site go down as another one did recently.

I've just donated €100: That is not a fortune, a few hours work for me, maybe more, possibly fewer, from you.
If everyone else currently online followed my modest example the future of this magnificent site would be assured, with €1,400 from members and €4,900 from guests. C'mon everyone give Willy the ****** money!

Donation sent - Willy does a fantastic job here and deserves all the support we can give him. Even if every user only sent 5 Euros, we would pay for it in no time.

IMHO the additional CPU and memory Willy talks about should be the aim as a minimum. If a new server is procured it should have the clout to do the whole job and some in reserve for future demand. I would even spec it one notch higher to ensure a smooth future operation, but thats Willy's decision obviously - its just that if we go for this as many are, it makes sense to go the whole hog and not cheese pair it.

Dont hesitate to up the spec a little Willy, IMHO people will back you 100% - whatever hardware is needed to do a smooth trouble free job for both the User and yourself.

Willy, maybe you should change the default choice on the donations page from "Server rack/bandwidth/power for BOINCstats" to the "BOINCstats server donation drive." It seems odd to me that next month is almost paid in advance when often even a month or two is overdue. Maybe some who intended to donate to the new server forgot to select that choice, and the donation went there by mistake. I almost forgot when I made my donation for the new server myself. Anyway, just a thought.

We are up to 64% of what we need for BOINCstats' new server!

Server locked up a few minutes ago. I started checks/repairs on the database. Don't expect updates the coming two hours.

I drafted another setup for the new server. Any suggestions for better hardware are appreciated. I changed the mainboard from the previous draft. That mainboard had two CPU sockets and I'm only placing one. It also turned out that the CPU is shipped without cooler so that's included as well. I also picked the SSD's I want to use.

Server locked up again, all repairs done.

The donation drive is going really well. I was ready to jump the gun and order the parts (delivery time for some parts > 2 weeks) because I'm confident that we'll reach the goal of €2000, but then I got an offer for some high-end hardware. I'm waiting how that turns out before deciding on the final parts. Whatever the outcome, I'd like to have the new server up and running before the end of march.

The donation amount was changed to €3000 which is the latest estimation.

Server locked up again. I will have to restore the database from backup and restart the daily update.

Edit: I also had to recover the table with all the progress for BOINC combined of today, which means that only in BOINC combined there is no user progress for today. This will be solved after the next daily update.

We are at 68% of the goal of 3K Euros for the new server.
