Hi,

I am using BOINC client and manager in Linux Fedora 12 and in the last days I am having a weird problem.

BOINC client stopped to sync with my account manager in BAM correctly. Although the message log said "Account manager contact succeeded", afer that I was getting a message saying "Inconsistent signing key from account manager" or something like that. I read in the forums that this might be caused by a failed communication between my client and BAM and that detaching and re-attaching to BAM should fix the problem.

I did that and, instead of solving the problem, I am now getting another error message. I can attach to BAM, I can select a project to be attached to my host in boincstats web site, but when I sync my BOINC client with BAM I am getting the error message "Bad signature for URL ..." for every project I attach to my host.

I've tried to reinstall the application and I also erased all the work data BOINC stores in my computer. However, every time I try to connect to BAM I am getting the same problem. If I try to connect directly to a project, it works fine.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue?

Best regards,

Leonardo Garcia

I have been having the very same experience since moving to Fedora 12 x86_64 from Fedora 12 i686 PAE on two Core i7 machines. Both were working fine with BAM! before the change, and the other 13 machines I have crunching continue to work fine with the same BAM!/Boincstats account.

After not using BAM! on either of those two machines for several days (both continued to crunch but connected directly to projects rather than BAM!), I just now reattached this one to BAM! and received the following in response to the initial reattachment and synchronization:

Hi @ all!

Here same problem:

all projects are denied with error message: [error] bad signature for URL ...

I'm using v6.10.17 with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit.

What's wrong here? I had now problems so far with other versions of Ubuntu + BOINC client/manager (also using BAM!)

Thanks in advance,
Michlix

At the moment I have no Linux system for testing.

BUT: On all my systems it's working fine (all Windows, sorry ) and there is no difference at all between the data send to Windows or Linux systems.

One of you could post the contents of acct_mgr_reply.xml.

I did, in my 03 February 2010 post above. The systems I have actively engaged in BOINC now are directly connected to the projects and are not using BAM!, much to my chagrin, due to not having sufficient comprehension of the inner workings of BOINC and BAM! to have resolved this already. Since I did not understand the problem, I did not know whether it would "heal" with the mere passage of time, so I continued with BAM! after the issue first arose, and I retried using BAM! a couple/few times after not using it for awhile, all to no avail. It has been awhile since I last tried, so.... I will try BAM! again on this same machine where I first encountered this issue when I get a "window of opportunity" later today or tomorrow, and I will paste the files/information prescribed elsewhere here for those of us seeking help, just as I did on 03 February 2010.

Hey folks!

Seems to be be solved this issue!
(or at least for me)

I just installed the latest (!) version of boinc (which is currently version 6.10.44 for linux x64) manually.

The version which comes with ubuntu for example was 6.10.17

After installing the newest version, I had to disconnect from BAM! and reconnect again.

And finally: it's working!!!

greez,
michlix

note: for installation instruction I used the one from ubuntuusers.de (im sorry, it's in german): http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/BOINC
Let me know if you need a translation...

Seems that they pulled .44 due to a bug. I'm using a 64bit Linux like the rest seem to. It seems it may be a bug in 64bits.

I installed a fresh Ubuntu Lucid amd64 yesterday. Bug persists. I had it before and after the new installation. I has to be 64 bit related, cause all 32 bit boins run fine.

It's running perfectly fine on my 64bit, so that can't be the reason. My BM version is 6.10.17.

I don't think there is much I can do about it. The BAM! reply is the same for all types of hosts, no matter the OS or other characteristics of the host.

I only have Windows systems (the last Linux one was a burn-in test about 3 months ago) and they all add projects without problems.

This seems to indicate that the XML received by the RPC was corrupted somehow. As you can see in the XML you PM-ed me, there is no value host_uhntiiccaator in it. Also, the closing tag for that is host_authentictoor, both should be the same and should be "host_authenticator". I'm not sure on which end the error occurs.

Since BAM! gets garbage, it can't find the host in the database. I also turned off error suppressing (to track down the problems) which makes the returned XML garbage due to the error.

This might be relevant - I reported what I think is the same problem to boinc, and they said the problem is information received from boincstats:

I don't believe this is a BAM (BOINCstats is the stats not the account manager) problem. I base this on having this issue on only one of over thirty hosts I have used BAM with.

Based on the reports I have seen and my personal experience I think this is a problem with Ubuntu 10.04 Linux x64, and possibly other x64 Linux distros as well. Note for me RHEL 5.x x64 has not had this issue.

I have numerous host+OS combinations running various BOINC 6.10.x versions. This includes several running 6.10.58 including; Vista x64, Windows 7 x64; RHEL 5.x x64, and Ubuntu 10.04 x64. Of these the only one that gets this error is the Ubuntu host and it only started getting the error after upgrading from 9.x to 10.04. With this host I have used the BOINC package from getdeb and the install file from Berkeley and both get the error. For all hosts other than the Ubuntu I have used install packages from Berkeley, including on the RHEL 5.x hosts.

My experience leads me to believe one of the libraries that BOINC uses for XML/RPC/... is messed up on some x64 Linux distros. I don't know enough about how the BOINC and Account Manager interaction works (and don't plan to learn) to narrow the issue any further.

Willy if I am wrong and Berkeley shows this is an issue that requires a change to BAM to work correctly with Linux hosts let me know. I have RHEL 5.x x32 and x64 as well as Ubuntu 10.04 x64 hosts I can help test with.

It has been confirmed by the BOINC devs that this is a bug in the client and it will be fixed in the next published release.

Now that the problem is identified I'll see if there is something I can do to automagically fix the wrong xml.

I have 4 extremely powerful ubuntu 10.04 machines with 7 gpus (5x Tesla2050, 1xGTX295 (two gpus), and a GT220) that I was trying to donate downtown towards BOINC. This bug is affecting all of them.

update edit: glad you found a fix.

Willy,

I saw this in the 6.12.17 release notes. Is this the fix for this problem?

- client: surround the opaque field in a CDATA block.

If so I will test on my problem host and post the results.

OK seems 6.12.17 has work fetch issues so I will not be testing it. I guess I will try 6.12.18 when it is released
