@steffan- I have about 400 hosts active actually. The other 250 are because the various projects for some reason don't allow me to delete old hosts.

@Lunarcom Running 400 cruncher host here in Norway - would cost some 8000 $ a month and I would have to work a half year to pay that bill.

Well, I was allowed to set up BOINC on all the computers at my work. . . There are some 200 P4's with 3GHz processors and 1GB RAM. That should do, I guess

@Kiva I have measured the power consumption on each of the computers and on average it costs us $5. 00 CDN a month to run the computer 24 hours a day. Course for varying amount of time each day they are used for work and rest for BOINC.

@winyetta. That is great of your workplace to agree to helping the cause. Now comes the joy of trying to keeping them all up and running and crunching as much as possible.

@lunarcom. I am all for the cause; dont get me wrong, but your math is off. A more appropriate figure would be: . 100kilowatts per computer*400computer s*24 hours*30 days*$. 10 per kilowatt equals $2880 per month.

@brett. This works out to $2880000 per month for 400 PCs. surely the 100kW/ PC is far too high? I hope my PC does not use that much . . . more like . 5 kW?

Given the rate of 6 cents per kilowatt hour that we pay it ends up costing around $5 a month, per computer, that I run BOINC on. 12 hours a day these machines are used for work and 12 hours a day for boinc. So 400 machines x $5 per machine is $2,000

Tobie, 1 average P4 consumes 250-350W, 12 hours of work translates to 3. 5-4 KW-hours per PC.

brettrobins@gmail. co: dont get me wrong your math is not correct for 50KW generator only you can power average office with 60 PCs, 10 server, including air-cos, water pumps and water boilers

Valerie, I agree. With a 500W (0. 5 kW) power supply it should not exceed . 5 kW

Valery Monitors should add to the power consumption, depending on the type and usage. Not sure by how much though.

I've found most of my machines > 2GHz run at between 80 and 100 watts under full processor load. . . That's probably a safe average to use.
