very often people are buying new computer for 3-5 years, then the buy another. also water cooling is a good idea i think. . but as far as you are not overclocking, standart fans should be ok.

Open up the case and stand a wine bottle filled with water on top of the power supply with ruined fan. It acts as a cooling tower. Don’t put wine, it goes bad.

@annieb: according to me, most of the 24/24h crunchers are computer enthousiasts that know how to change fan's. For the rest, all normal computers have a thermal shutdown, so they won't die even without fans running.

@athmoz: Yes, most know how to change fans. Yes, thermal protection on CPU. But NO protection on power supply normally. It'll just fry. And costs more than €5. I'll take the risk, but knowingly.

@annieb: How many power supplies did you fry up to now?

I've been doing this for a couple of years on a few computers and have only replaced one power supply. My computers are usually running 24 hours a day. They aren't the newest computers but they do the trick and I haven't experienced a big problem.

@wizzszz: I've lost 3supplies. I've been on S@H since 99 so they last around 2 years.

@annieb: great! then they die in the warranty Period . (I always buy OCZ supplies with 3y unlimited warranty, and after 3y they're still running great), but now that you know, just replace the fan after 1. 5y and the problem is solved.

@Brian: Ask Willy somewhere in the fora, where it stays a bit longer.
