@william: It should be no problem for a normal machine to run on 100% straight, it's build for that. But ther is a solutionafaik (never tried myself): Treadmaster, it's ib the add-on list (boinc. berkeley. edu/download_network . php)

@william: Using BOINC WILL wear things out faster. Don't fool yourself. In particular the cpu cooling fan will run faster/more often and will wear more. The cpu itself is fine. AND it does use power. Go into this with your eyes open.

Is there a way to read the Shout box entries once they scroll off the bottom of the frame?

I think any computer enthusiast would say if a comp isnt stable at 100% load indefinately, then its not stable at all. . boinc or no boinc. . and problems should get fixed. . @ no one in particular, but I seem to see some slightly misleading discussion

Computers are completely stable at full cpu load, BUT, fans wear out. Life is between 10000 and 30000 hours, about 1 to 4 years, at max speed. Halve the stress, double the life. Your choice.

and who cares about a fan? fans cost just about 5€ a piece, en if you've installed 4 of them in your pc, it will cost you 20€ a year to replace the fan's. Anyway, my fans live far longer than 1 year @ 24h load, so the actual cost wil be far lower

what the deal is if youo over heat the cpu then you build heat on the mother board which will make other componets hot also, like the g card, and disk drives and soforth like that so why throw away a decent computer is what I was wanting to know I

Just looking at the drop out rate for the different projects and it seems to be that about 60% of those who sign up to grid computing drop out after a few days or weeks. Willy this would make interesting stats for those of us that stick with it!

@Athmoz: You might build your own PC (I do), but Joe Average just sees a dead computer when his fans die. Normal use is fine. Low room temp, non 100% CPU load, switched off at night, then you'll get at least 8 years from a fan, but not with boinc.
