I'm on a tight budget - what gpu's do you reccommend - for ATI & Nvidia?

It depends on whether you want to run 24/7 or just a few hours a day

Ironically, some of the best performance per watt figures are scored by 250 Watt or more cards

For 24/7 I'd recommend the HD 7750

nVidia-wise only the GTX 680 runs at an affordable performance/watt ratio

For small spurts you'd best use the HD 6990 or the HD 7970

@Mark Reiss:
Define tight. Would $120 be a small investment? An HD 6850 sits there as does a GTX 550 TI.

less than 75W). Nearly a teraflop SP when overclocked. Issue is cost, but it is efficient.

Economy of scale does err in the favor of the 250W + cards. Think of the heat/power on 24/7 though. Spurts is right.

The question is, do you want to buy for GFlops/$ (6850) or GFlops/W (7750)?

HD 7750 costs around $100 (purchase) and runs at less than 75W (as low as 55W)

Extreme performance, but at extreme prices as well. HD 7750 and HD 7770 are most economic

Even more economic is the Llano platform, using an A8 APU combined with a DDR3 HD 6670 card=1248 GFLOP@46W

@Dirk Broer: I don't think you answered 7.62's query because I don't think PrimeGrid is "science". Am I right 7.62 ?

And I still don't know why a Core2Quad gets more credits than a X5680.

@ALexpc1: I have named several projects that run on a AMD/Ati GPUs, so if 7.62 thinks they are all 'not science' ....
