Credits should not be given regardless, due to those people who would overclock their comps (or whatever) and chew through tons of WUs. That's wasted time, science and resources. Not to mention it's cheating.

I ignore credits. I do this for a good feeling, to know I'm helping others out of my generousity.

@Huntster: As I said, PrimeGrid and Rosetta are the only two BOINC projects (I know) that grants 100% of the credits you actually cliam. No Cheating here! As per the science, both receive a bunch of successfuly crunched WUs, don't they?

@K-K: I respect your motives. But then, why I find you in a place where it deals with credits, positions and stats if it wasn't for credits monitoring?

@O&O That is because those projects only sends out 1 copy of a workunit, there is no checking or verifying against several other participants, it is still entirely possible to cheat on the credit

overclocking is part of life. the only thing thats cheating about it is the fact that you are cheating the processor manufacturer out of the money you would have paid for a faster chip.

how is overclocking cheating? if you take the risk to crash your cpu, you earned the higher credit you get.

@O&O: If you are so frustrated about people with faster computers and more luck with their WU, go to the forum, and discuss it there. It gets boring to see you write it over and over again!

The reason for a quorum is that each machine computes differently. The reason a WU fails is usually a miscalculation - hence a quorum = accruate results. You may have just crunched 10hr, and got 0 due to the error. Even happens on PG with q = 1

Overclocked machines may calculate wrong results because of theoverstrassed CPU. No problem for games, but well for science. Hence the quorum. Overclocking is not per se cheating, but may be in effect do just that.

@Sänger: Overclocking isn't much more cheating than buying a faster machine! And everybody has broken WUs, so it is still fairly distributed. I still can't see any disadvantage for O&O

You're missing the point. Overclocking is NOT the same as a faster PC. Faster machines are designed to go faster. The slower machine isn't, and that causes errors in the calculations. It isn't speed or credits that's at issue, it's accuracy of results.

So to OC you CHANGE the design. Thus redesigning it to go faster. Last time I checked, my OC'd mashines were faster than w/o OC, why bother otherwise? I'ts a win-win. Don' fight it
