My favorite hobbies are listening to blues music, reading novels by Ian Rankin, and bungee jumping into black holes.
I first began programming in FORTRAN on a CDC Cyber 170-740 Supercomputer in 1979. This was a system that was shared by most of the public colleges and universities in the state of Georgia. On a average afternoon, this system had more than a hundred users working on teletype terminals, which printed a blazing 10 characters per second. That CDC Cyber "Supercomputer" was one of the fastest systems made at that time. It could execute about 1 MIPS. Floating point operations ranged from 1 MFLOPS for FORTRAN applications to 50 MFLOPS for optimized assembler programs, which were the only way to utilize the system's vector processing capability to achieve top speed. This 1979 supercomputer had an incredible 256K of memory and costs millions of dollars!
I can't wait to see what computing looks like in another 30 years...Yes, Mr. Data?
Opinion about BOINCstats/BAM!BOINCstats and BAM! make it easy and fun to manage and monitor the 20+ PCs I have in my home running BOINC. I perform work on SETI, Climate Prediction, and a variety of medical research projects. BOINCstats and BAM! help me make sure that my systems are never idle and always have work to do.
