Hi guys,
I'm running several projects under BOINC Manager version 6.6.36, and the STD/LTD numbers aren't making sense to me. According to the Unofficial BOINC WIKI:
Versions 6.x+. Long term debt is shifted such that the mean is always 0 (the sum of all Long Term Debt values is 0).

However, I'm seeing numbers like this:
The Long Term Debt is most definitely not adding up to 0.

Also, how are they getting to be so far negative in the first place? You can see my resource share, and I have both computers set through BAM to have a 5-day cache. Are there some other settings I should modify to bring these numbers under control, other than the boincDV program or the client_state.xml edit?

Thanks.

What little I understand about the long/short term debt is a problem I don't have because I keep my caches low and run my computers almost 24/7.

. . . if the computer thinks it has too much work to finish, it will go into panic mode and will not download anything more because it is concerned about finishing the work before the time limit.

There are ways to force this, but that is way over my paygrade.

The above is normally true, but you see all negative LTD because some of your projects are "overworked" as noted in your status (You have your total project resources adding up to 200%). With version 6.6.xx of the client, both short and long term debt is reset to zero every time you restart the client. Or you can manually zero your debt (without the need to restart the client) by using the boinc command tool and issuing a "boinccmd --set_debts" command for each of your projects.

Thanks for your reply.

How do I get them off of "overworked"?
(You have your total project resources adding up to 200%).

That's because there are two computers listed there, each computer's resources are only at 100%

each time I reboot the computer, or do I only have to cycle BM? I don't really understand the point of the numbers if I have to manually reset them each time they reach an excessive amount.

You don't have to reboot, but you need to do more than recycle Boinc Manager. You have to recycle the BOINC Client. The point of the numbers is to prevent your client from fetching more work when you already have more than you can handle.

probably only DA and his gang understand what's the purpose of this - you might try the next version - 6.6.37 available here: Index of /dl

I was able to get the LTD under control by downgrading to 6.4.7. It now adds up to 0 per computer as it should, and none of the projects are developing excessive LTD, positive or negative. Though I only downgraded in order to fix a problem with projects saying "no work downloaded, won't finish in time".

IIRC, somewhere between 6.4.7 and the currently recommended one (maybe with 6.6.x) the LTD got changed from summing up to zero to be always zero or less.

And the debts are only reset with every restart of BOINC if you forget to remove the <zero_debts> clause from your cc_config.xml file.

I had not made any modifications to any of those files, so had not removed the <zero_debts> section, yet the LTD was never reset. Is that something that ought to be done, removing that section? I don't know if I could "forget" to do something I was never explicitly told to do.

That is only true if you inserted <zero_debts>1</zero_debts> into your cc_config.xml file. So, if you don't have a cc_config.xml file or never inserted that clause, your debts won't get reset.

If you upgraded from pre-6.6, you should reset the debts once, though, because of the change of the fomula.
