Hi,
I recently became a member to this community, and I had BOINC version 6.6.20. Everything was fine, (IE) I was able to use BOTH of my graphics cards, a GTX280 and a 8800GT for CUDA. When I downloaded BOINC version 6.6.28 everything changed. It seems that it does not have multi-GPU support enabled at install, and oddly, it also made the fan on my primary GPU cycle from 45RPM to 75-80RPM every few seconds.

This was due to the fact that this new version was apparently using more resources on my 280, causing it to heat up OVER 100C up to 107C. With 6.6.20 it never went above 90C. All while NOT even using the 8800GT. SO if anyone there read's this please check out this problem. I was able to restore back to 6.6.20. BUt if it is possible, maybe that version should be in the Archives?

Did you look at the SETI@home CUDA forum already? There's this message for example.

There's an archive, but it's well hidden: Lookie here!
I have sorted it by date so the newest development version is at the top.

HI!!!!
Thank you both Gondolf, and Cori. I appreciate the help.

Gundolf, I DID read that thread in the forum, but it did not help me because I dont have two of the same cards in SLI. I have two different Nvidia cards, I installed the second one JUST to help with BOINC because it is a fairly powerful CUDA enabled GPU.

Cori, I searched for those archives for a while and could not find them!!! Thank you for your post! Now that I have it I will experiment with different versions to see which one gives me the best results with my setup. I just dont want to run 6.6.28 because it REALLY ran my GTX280 to near nuclear status, And i am not gonna allow that piece of harware to meltdown because of it.

It is interesting to note that the 8800GT runs to 100C with no problems, but im still sceptical of that temp. Belive it or not, my PC heats my room up about 10F when I run Boinc through the night!!!! I think I will seek some better cooling, I have to run my pc with the side panel off and a LARGE fan directed torwards it!!! CRAZY!

If your CPU is an LGA 775 pin CPU I had very good results with this one from Arctic Cooling. It lowered my CPU temps from roughly 65-69°C down to 48-52°C. If your CPU is not 775 pin they also have other excellent products, one of which I'm sure will work for you.

As far as the heat in your room is concerned, that won't change with better cooling for your CPU, you'll have to cool your entire room. CPU cooling will only dissipate the heat faster from your processor, it won't remove the heat altogether.

Thank you FAN13027 for that post!
I appreciate your help, and yes I have an LGA775 processor , however, I happen to have the Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU cooler , and it keeps my INTEL Q6600 CPU @ 61C and its OC'ed from 2.4Ghz to 3Ghz.
My problem is the extreme heat produced by both of my video cards, not to mention how much heat is generated by my Antec EA650 PSU. When I crank on Boinc, it REALLY has to work pumping amperage to both those hungry video cards, and the CPU. The cards have a total draw of 68 Amps at full throttle!!! So when they are pumping, the PSU starts blowing hot air as well. I think I will seriously consider buying a window A/C unit to assist in the room cooling. I think its my only hope to continue contributing to SETI@home.

I assume you mean 68 Watts... Unless you've got a REALLY power hungry setup going on there, like a CRAY mainframe or something.

No, I'm sure he means 68 amps. The weakest of the bunch, the 8800GT, officially uses 105 watts alone and the GTX280 more than double that! Have a look at GPUreview.com.

Meanwhile ... here are one local vendors System Requirements as listed on their website. 42 Amps for the GTX280 alone!

Hi guys,
I would like to clarify my statement. Noderaser, I DID mean 68 amps, not watts and thank you fan 13027 for the verification! However those amprage draw figures are for vanilla cards (vanilla means Nvidia GPU clock settings). I however have special overclocked edition cards from EVGA.

The first is a GTX280 FTW (For The Win edition), and the second is an EVGA superclocked 8800gt. So they draw MORE amperage than the normal cards...

However, I have overclocked them further using the EVGA Precision utility so they are using even MORE amperage. The 8800gt has an output of 64Gb/s and the GTX280 has 155/Gb/s. To put this in perspective, a Playstation 3 has about 60 Gb/s throughput.

These cars are helping me CRUNCH through numbers for SETI using CUDA software. I have as of this moment 59,080 credits since I started April 16, 2009. In less than one MONTH!!!!!! And I have 11,885.32 credits pending since then at this time. SO yes noderaser, I meant 68 amps.

Ok, we're talking 68 A @ 12 VDC... I thought that you were measuring the power draw from the outlet... Which would be around 8 kW @ 120 VAC...

All three of my computers only draw around 375 W with my CRT monitor turned on! Haven't done any CUDA yet, though I could.

It would be easier to check out if you surrounded it by like this:-)
