Hi,
I am a bloody simple user, not engaged to spend much time on this boinc and bam thingie, this should be just for fun.
Some story around: New shiny pc, gentoo world-merge in less than 12 hours (800 packages), so a lot of spare time for my 2 cpus between my updates

Idea: Lets do sth good with this power, there were some nice "give-me-your-cpu-time-for-free-projects" out there. Ah seti, yes. Uh, they have a nice Open Source client. Fine. Ah, with graphics and stats and a lot of projects to spend my cpu-time on. That is exactly what I want. Gimme.
emerge boinc -> Masked on amd64. That does not start well.
Ok, i can cope with that, so unmask and get it.
Oh a happy little init-script. Lets start it.
Fine .. waiting .. wating .. nothing happening.
Ah, I have to choose a Project first. Right. That will be simple for sure. Hmm .. sign up for a new Account .. ok .. args, they want my mail-addi .. grml .. ok I´ll do even that. Where is the Link to "create new account"? .. Some Minutes of searching on several Project pages later, I realized that there is even a meta-site called boincstats helping to manage accounts. Ok, lets use that. Fine.
Ok, account stuff done, now give me a project. Lets start with seti, this is nice and well known and surely works for me. Ah, I just need to enter the project-address. This is actually a clever idea. Communicating .. answer: no binary found for amd64. Grml. Lets check forums, they will surely help me. Oh there are just two or three Projects working with this arch. Damn. Ok, I´ll choose seti-beta and this chess960 thing. Sounds good. Hmm .. seti still not works (after searching 10 Minutes for the correct website-link of seti-beta). But chess960 works. Good. After 7 Minutes for the first two tasks, the next 2 tasks didn´t show any completion-time or status update. Ok, I´ll just wait a little longer. Next morning: Uh, still working on theese two tasks without any progress. Lets kill this stupid thing, they obviously don´t want my cpu-time. Go away. emerge --unmerge boinc
Abstract:
- No stable software for my mainstream arch.
- Horribly complicated setup, account creating and management. No useful "howto get started" links on prominent project-pages.
- Only one working project for my arch (no, I will not install 32-bit stuff).
- Buggy software, that hangs in a forever loop.
HOWTO get a new user:
Wait there was something about this mprime thing. Yeah, gimps right.
emerge gimps
/etc/init.d/gimps start
Done. Working. No account creation, no setup problems, just two commands in my shell and its done. Downer: No happy little graphics.
Conclusion:
You should definitely consider to simplify the setup procedure and you should make the hole system much more beginner friendly and more transparent. I don´t want to spend much time on this topic, it should just work without any hassle. You want my time for your project. I don´t want anything from you.
