Had a quick poke around it only 9 projects supported, they reackon not every project can support AMS, not true Willy has them all added just some of them not all the functions work as yet.

On the signup page once you have done selecting the projects it makes accounts for you and then downloads a version of BOINC that is branded with the GR logo all over it, what they fail to tell the users is you can use your normal BOINC client and just sign up with the URL then user-name & password.

lad, I admit you are right, in fact that this thing lacks of enough support and projects it doesn't even compete to BAM.

But... I find it interesting how this projects points graph looks.
I don't want to animate anyone to "steal" this style, but it would be nice to see a similar graph here in BAM or at the Stats...
Would be a fine addition to our graphs...

Have to agree would be a nice addition to have in our BAM! accounts to look at, only described it as a pathetic attempt from GR as that's the only stats they show.

Unlike here where I can click a link in BAM! and my in-depth stats come up.

I really do not get why BOINC Dev's are ringing all there bells and blowing there whistles over GR, they talk about it more than BAM!

BAM! more developed, works as it should, loved by the users, not many bugs left in there, updated regularly to support new projects. Only 1 choice for me

Edit: Just checked my e-mail and guess whats in my Junk Mail, an e-mail from GR as I signed up just to get a log in, to see what it looks like made me smile

Also there is this page

I think Willy ruled it out at one point I don't recall now, but would be nice to see something like this within the BAM! menu system too. Also the graph on the link on that page would be good to have as well in the BAM! menus

Those numbers don’t match BOINCstats. I guess they take the total hosts or users attached to BOINC (not GR but BOINC as total) and calculate the maximum possible Gflops. They come out at 1,372,452. BOINCstats only calculates real performance based on the work done in the last days and it calculates this as 400,263 Gflops. Quite a difference (still at number one though).

BTW: if I made that list, what would be the name, site and vendor of the system? BOINCstats or BOINC?
Please do not PM, IM or email me for support (they will go unread/ignored). Use the forum for support.

Real work figures are always the best not pretend ones

I assume the name & site would be BOINCstats/BAM! and the Vendor to be BOINCstats/BAM! with BOINC?

Is it possible for you to do graphs then along the same lines as over there? One showing the total from all BAM! members and one for each individual person. Is it possible to also have a page that shows everyone that uses BAM!?

PS: Have a nice Holiday

GR is playing with numbers in a way I can't accept.

If you looks at their homepage, there are 970k users.
How many users GR actually have? A thousand?

Taking BOINC users as "our" (understand GR users)? This is not a correct way.

What is GR? A screen saver?

Maybe its worth looking at the new "Simple GUI" being produced by Rom and others for World Community Grid :

http://www.romwnet.org/dasblogce/CategoryView,category,User%2BInterfaces.aspx

As its gonna have skins, perhaps someone could produce a BAM skin once the logo is agreed on and Rom releases details of how to produce the skin. I'm no expert but it might even be able to have a BAM button on it to Synchronize with BAM.

Could be more friendly for new BOINC users.

The skin is based on XML, so anyone that knows XML should be able to make a skin very easily. I don't know fully yet what is show on the simplified version but as far as I know you would have to go into the normal mode (current BOINC layout) to go to the menu to synchronise anything.

I know as much to say that if you download BOINC from WCG it will come with a WCG skin pre-loaded, if you get it from the normal BOINC site then it will just have whatever the normal BOINC skin will be.

Should not be too long until it is out for testing

I contacted them about the 970k users and they said :

"probably we are incorrectly accounting for users who have accounts at multiple projects; thanks for bringing this to my attention."

have to see if they change that number

Sounds like a false number with false answer to me.
Or, they know only a little about BOINC.

(assuming there are 1k users on pre-public and very incomplete GR, each would need to be attached to 970 project!).

I contacted them as well, but as it was sunday, they will probably answer no sooner then today.
I asked about the adorning borrowed plumes on the stats page and the location of the forum.
I asked as well about their benefits compared to BAM!

I wait to see their evading answer.

Duh. I will only comment on one part of that email response, about GR completely designing the system, using lots of money, and Willy just taking and using it.

It's not like we haven't put a finger at BOINC code. There were a bunch of issues reported to David Anderson, there were a few fixed by us. We even contributed to the design (for example, previous_host_cpid that allows to match the host after attaching it to a new project). We made notices to them about some nonsense elements in the design, like, reading preferences from the projects but not directly from BAM (yeah, they were declined). We did not even think about ANY MONEY for doing that.

Now he claims he's done all the work? And the point that "he has used lot's money on it" just does not seem right. Yeah, if you're stating that you worked for two years every day (i'm guessing less than five minutes/day, judging on the results) and not doing anything else to earn the money, yeah, why not, you're using it! And how can two people (Willy mainly coding and I supplying initial technical details about BOINC system and primary testing) create a product that is comparable (or even better, but it's for you to judge the level) without even thinking about money?

Matt, if you're reading this. Don't be offended, but you'd better have used the money that you got (just speculating, I'm not sure if I know the details) after your father's death for DIRECTLY influencing some project that works on cancer research, and NOT trying to steal work from others (hint: no mention of BOINC apart from the small note at the bottom of the page; but I'm sure you'll change it) and claim it to be yours.

All in all, GR needs work. As do BAM!. Just I don't really like your position of GR being a cure for all diseases.

Just my two cents, I hope noone was offended by this long post.

Thanks for your Viewpoints Rytis much appreciated, it seems my posting has also got the attention on D.Anderson

My contacts at GR tell me you're criticizing them in various venues.
Can I ask you either to stop doing this,
or give me a call (xxx xxx xxxx) to discuss your complains about GR?

From my viewpoint, GR is a good thing.
They're trying to make BOINC accessable to the masses.
I don't know if they're going to succeed, but the hope is
that they'll bring millions of participants who need
things to be very simple.
So any negative publicity for GR could be damaging to
BOINC in the long run.

But if you have complaints about GR, I'd like to hear them.

Makes you wonder though why they don't just communicate with people earlier rather than letting things blow up out of proportion in the 1st place

good read and clears things up for many I would think

I have to say, I contacted Matt from GR because of my post and his response on the seti boards (deleted because of swear words :]). There's one phrase in my letter that I will post there (the rest of the conversation should remain private):

Take this a friendly advice - if you want support from BOINC community, be honest with them. And the sooner you start to change, the better.

Matt a bit misunderstood this, taking it in person. I had in mind the conspiracy surrounding GR project. In any case, he explained quite a lot to me, and Rom's post clears things up completely.

I am just guessing that Rom's post does not get lost. It should be stated in some official place to help clear up the confusion.
