May be using AES encryption functions(AES-NI). Clock for clock I7 second generation(Sandybrige) is 2x performance of I7 first generation(Westmere).

My i7-3770 (Ivy Bridge) does not perform significantly better than my Athlon 5350 (Socket AM1), kudos for the AM1 platform!

I'm unable to see the data you speak of. Are both systems running stock? What are the actual run times for each on VGTU?

Most of my systems are running Linux. Monday I will launch it on identical systems running Linux and Windows. I'm switching to only second gen I7's and newer for this challenge.

I have a Athlon 5350 running 64-bit Windows 10 that takes 3 hours to complete a WU, while a 5350 running Ubuntu 15.10 takes less than 2 hours.

In WuProp database: AMD Athlon Jaguar 5350 1.9 (1.8 - 1.9) 64-bit Linux 3.3 (3.2 - 3.3) 64-bit Windows You can get these figures via selecting WuProp in the Boinc Manager, choose 'Results' in the left menu, choose 'Projects' at the WuProp site, then 'VGTU', then the VGTU application.

My I7 2700K(3.5GHz) under Linux is running 8 threads at 1.009 hours per thread. That puts the 2700K at 190.28 wu/day vs 48 wu/day for the 5350. I used 2 hour run time for the 5350 as I don't know the exact run time. Feel free to recalculate the 5350 score based on the real run time.

Ok, I see the numbers now. Funny they have no numbers for the i7 3770 in Linux. Basically the same as the i7 2600 which is reporting .9 hours in linux with HT(8 threads). The 5350 in Linux is 1.8 to 1.9, I will use 1.8. Based on those numbers it is 213 wu/day vs 53.3 wu/day. You are right, that isn't significant. I would call that out of the ball park.

Wow, it shows Windows uses 5x (1MB vs 5.3M the memory of Linux. No wonder Linux is so much faster. With a 1MB memory usage it should fit in the CPU cache nicely.

1.7 per WU against 1.8 is not significant, especially as I can buy seven 5350s for the price of one i7-3770 over here.

Dirk, you are comparing windows to linux as well as the two processors. Linux runs much faster, as much as 2x faster. Using the same OS(Linux), the times would be .9 vs 1.8 or 2x faster for the i7 3770 per thread. The i7 running 8 threads vs 4 for the 5350. That puts the 3770 at 4x faster.

In my computer room the i7 takes as long for a WU as the 5350 -I am not going to change OS-es for this challenge-, but the price of a Athlon 5350 AM1 system is 1/7th of that of a i7-3770 system. That makes the i7 a pricy piece of hardware. It is cheaper to have two 5350 systems. The 5350 runs on a far lower wattage too (90 Watt PSU is enough).

I know the 5350 is lower power and cheaper but how does the total system cost of four 5350's vs one 3770? I think the loaded power of a 5350 is around 40w or 160w for four systems. That is right about the same power as a single 3770. I would say cost wise are on par for work/$ expense. I prefer to have fewer systems taking up space.

Don't blame the hardware on your OS choice. If you are concerned about price drop the expensive windows OS for a free and fast OS. Cost of nothing to double your output.

Running 44 projects on that i7, Linux is not always the better choice when using Intel.
