One of my Box's has been down for 3 days now & so far I haven't been able to figure out whats wrong with it. I've changed every major Hardware piece on it but it still won't even Post, all I get is a no Video Detected message from the Monitor. It's not the Monitor because if I hook up another Computer to it it works fine so far I've Changed the:

1-Motherboard
2-CPU
3-Video Card
4-Memory
5-PSU
6-CMSO Battery

The Hard Drive work because I pulled it & hooked it up to another Box to get the BOINC Files off so the Wu's could be run out on it. I'm at a loss, unless I'm missing something that somebody could suggest to try I guess I'll have to take it in to be looked at. I've never had to do that as I've always been able to figure out what was wrong with a Box but this one has me stumped so far ... ???

I don't think thats it Frank, all the Fan's start up, Power light comes on, Liquid Cooling System starts up, I can feel a little vibration in the Hard Drives (2) too as if their spinning so there's Power going thru the System ... When I say it won't Post I don't mean the Computer won't get past a certain point in the Start up Sequence, I mean it won't Post anything, like detecting the Drives or Memory etc ...

how long do you wait for something to show up?

detach HD's and CD's and look what happens.

Hi PB!!
Have you tried booting another box using the C drive, just to check that it's not an OS thing, or doesn't it even get as far as booting the BIOS?

Cheers,

Chris

I think I got it figured out earlier & it has something to do with the Speed of Memory I'm using, I tested the Memory before changing Motherboards & just thought the different Motherboard would accept the same type of Memory but I don't think it does. I did get it to Post but then have had to do other things since then & haven't had time to mess with it any further. I'll post in a few hours if I was right or not on the Memory Speed thing when I can mess with it again ...

may be - if bios is set to get timings from SPD (roflmao germany) and timings stored there are too fast for the board...

.. some silly bios-developer might not have taken precautions for that.

It's still messed up, changing to a slower Memory at least got the Box to Post far enough to where I can get into the BIOS but thats about it. It won't boot into Windows, hangs right at the point is should Boot to the Desktop. Using a Installation CD doesn't get me any further, the Drivers load but then hangs right where it should Boot to where I can Re-install Windows.

I'm not sure if Linux is still on that Box or not, it shows it in the Boot Menu but won't boot into Linux either. I'm going to try hooking the Drive to another Box & try to Format the Drive & then Try Re-Installing Windows. Thats about all I can do for now I guess but it may not let me Format it since it would have a Windows Operating System on it ... I'll try a New Clean Drive if that doesn't work tomorrow ...

I finally got it running without Re-Installing the OS, both Windows & Linux will boot, it's only running @ 2.4 GHZ though because of the ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard in it. It's supposed to be a Over-clockers dream when in reality it a nightmare to work with, utterly unclockable really.

It even has a AI Overclocker in the BIOS that doesn't work either, 5%-10%-15%-20% AUTO Overclock, the Box just locks up trying to use even the 5% setting ... ... I had to send out 2 Gigabyte Boards & will have to limp along with this set up until I get them back from Gigabyte.

The Memory was the problem all along, I had 8500 Memory (1066 FSB Memory) in it because thats what the Gigabyte Board was running with but the ASUS Board wouldn't do anything with it in it. So I put some Corsair 6400 Memory (800 FSB Memory) in it and at least it would boot to the point of almost going into Windows some times, other times it would give me a bunch of errors about "trying to write to read only memory" I don't know what that was all about.

So after a few hours of diddling around I tried some OCZ 6400 Memory (800 FSB Memory) & it booted right into Windows on the first try & Linux too. So I loaded up the Drivers for the Motherboard, tried to Overclock it some which got me no where & then just fired up BOINC again after transferring the filesback from the Box I transfered them to this morning. I don't know if the Corsair memory is bad that I tried or what, will contact Corsair about it, the've always been good about RMA's if need to RMA them.

I don't know if this has anythng to do with the Corsair XMS2-6400 Memory not wanting to work in the ASUS Board or not but the Memory reads as PC5300 (2 sets actually read that) ... I'm asking Corsair about it in their Forum, I would think if Memory is Labled as 6400 Memory it should read PC6400 when Booting but maybe I'm wrong about that ... ???

PS: Both sets of XMS2-6400 Memory work in another Box of mine so the Memorys not bad but just is rejected by the ASUS Board that uses 800FSB memory which the Corsair XMS2-6400 is in fact 800FSB Memory. OCZ Memory must be a naughty word in the COrsair Forum as it gets ********* out if you try to use it, I had to say other brand instead of OCZ Memory ...

ASUS boards are well known for their issues with memory. First thing to do with an ASUS board, as soon as you get it to boot, is to manually set the RAM voltages to the correct setting. My old board (an ASUS P5N32-E Sli) had default voltages of ~1.8v, yet the ram I was using needed 2.0v+. A trick many owners used was to boot with one set of RAM then go into BIOS and up the voltage, turn off, install new RAM and reboot. I also noted that when I had my board, they do not like anything above 6400 memory, and especially, it seems, anything made by OCZ.

On the overclocking side. I could never get my Q6600 above 2.85GHz. Again, it's an issue with 650 and 680 chipsets that they do not like to be overclocked. From now on I'm sticking with Intel chipsets.

Yeah, I don't have much use for the ASUSA Boards either when it comes to my Intel Quad's & Overclocking, for the P4 HT CPU's I had the ASUS Boards seemed to work pretty good but then they didn't overclock that much to begin with. I'll give the trick you mentioned a try and see if the Board will accept the Corsair Memory. I'm only running with 1 Gig right now cause thats all I have of the OCZ Memory but can use 2-4 gig's if I can get the Corsair Memory to work ...

PS: Nope, the Corsair Memory won't work that way either, I'll have my Gigabyte Boards back in 2-3 weeks and take the ASUS board back out, I only keep it around for moments when I absolutly don't have any thing else to use ... And then I grit my teeth having to use them ...
