The current record for the number of results is still 485,097 results validated on the "old" servers on Monday February 18, 2008.

I crunch SIMAP for the science and the scrambles. . .

. . . I crunch PrimeGrid for their excellent Challenge Series. . .

. . . I crunch Rosetta for the science and a change of pace. . .

BUT my home project is World Community Grid, especially Help Conquer Cancer and Help Fight Childhood Cancer.


My Mother and Sister died from cancer and my wife is a breast cancer survivor.

. . . from personal experience, I have seen the tremendous progress in cancer treatment and research in the past 30 years.

I have taken the women in my life to way many chemo and radiation appointments.

. . . and I seen entirely too many children and their anguished parents fighting this ugly disease.

I crunch, hoping that I might contribute a bit to making a world with fewer bald-headed children.

Even Sekerob [Community Advisor] is helping us out:


The Machine is running strong, today at a pace of ~325 TFL, middle of Northern Hemisphere summer. The Centre of Future Record Prediction also gave off an alert that 300,000,000 million results completed milestone is pinned down for July 21, 2009.

Already one team has set up a challenge to Smoke Test The New Server and get to that number earlier than the Centre projects. Of course we wish them to succeed . . . .

Perhaps I'm a knucklehead for not getting it, but is this challenge going on right now, despite being written as beginning on July 24? And when does it end? I have a couple of quads and a C2D that might help the cause.

This one is to have the most returns to the server in a single day:

Right now, WCG runs around 400K results per day on average.

I note that the number you mentioned is the number returned, whereas the number in your quote is the number validated in a single day. If we are to go after a record for validated results in a single day, I would think that participants should begin their attempt to break the record at least two, probably even three days in advance, since the validations will take a couple of days or more to go through the cycle. Is this correct?

edit: It should also be noted that starting to crunch early has another advantage. If you suspend all other projects for the crunchathon, it takes a day or so for BOINC scheduling to keep your cache filled up with just one projects worth of work units. Additionally, I think we would need to build up some unvalidated work in the queue so that they validate on the days we want them to validate.

Sadly, WCG crunchers aren't as elegant as those at PrimeGrid, so starting a few days early would be an advantage.

That could be a plan, but you have to remember that WCG has a huge installed base of crunchers who do nothing [or little] else.

. . . so just a 5-10% push from the out-of-towners could spike up the results numbers for the record.
