The solution, or so I thought!?!

System: Ubuntu Server & Desktop v.12.04.2 / BOINC 2 Server & 1 Desktop v.7.0.27, 1 Desktop v.7.1.10

Hi Guys,

Well, I thought I/we solved the problem, but I/we didn't. SOS - my brain is melting...

Here's what happened after I nuked 1 computer and reinstalled Ubuntu and BOINC & installed a brand new server:

1. After reinstalling the computer's OS, a Desktop in this case, I installed BOINC. I connected it to the to projects I always choose for my desktops seti@home and asteroids@home. Then I chose "Connect to an account manager" (BAM) and entered my username (the right one). The username which has the same information, email-address and username as I use in BOINC. My old account/first account! But, it didn't show in BAM under the "Host list" Of course not! It appeared in the "Host list" under the username (the wrong one) I wrongfully created a few days ago when I chose to use an account manager.

2. After having used a whole night reinstalling my desktop because of these BOINC/account manager issues, I was now ready to set the pc on fire!!! Then I thought maybe it's not me, maybe it IS a BUG!?! Therefore I mounted my brand new rack server and installed the OS Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 and the a BOINC-client. After this I joined 1 project, the seti@home project! Then I attached to an account manager using the boinccmd tool with the command "--join_acct_mgr URL name password" As with the desktop above I used my username (the right one) and in this case it appeared under the "Host list" It worked! This means it is not enough to nuke a computer and reinstall everything to solve the problem were you wrongfully created a new username for BAM with another email-address than the one you use in your project account/BOINC account!

The issue must be a problem with MAC-addresses or IP-numbers, or something completely else. Please help me.. I'm hanging by a thread here. I fell no need for dancing right now

Here you see the event-log from the computer which was nuked and reinstalled from scratch - connecting to BAM. It's a clean installation the only things which is not totally new to BAM is the computers mac-address and IP-number. Why does it connect to a wrong username again when it's a new installation both OS and BOINC?!?

I can't see why the brand new computer connects the my right username just fine, when the newly installed computer using the same username when connecting to BAM doesn't! It appears under the wrong username. MAC-address or IP-number, I don't now which, bit it must have to do with one of the to things... I can't see what else it could be. Maybe when I connect the computer to BAM, it checks the "bam.boincstats.com/get_project_config.php" file for known computers by IP-numbers or something like that, and the "places" the computer under the "right" BAM account.. I don't know.. Maybe the creator of BAM could be of some assistance here

I'm looking so much forward to hear from you again!

Regards,
Dan

In an ideal world I would take the following steps:
1. Create an account at BAM!, using the e-mailaddress and password that you also use for your existing projects.
2. Let BAM! find your account in all existing projects, using the "Find account" button.
3. Set in BAM! which projects are default installed on a host.
4. Install BOINC on a host. Don't install projects, but only install the (BAM!) accountmanager.
5. After the first synchronization with BAM! you should see the initialization of the default projects on the host.

In short: let BAM! do the work, it's designed for it

In regard of your trouble with the "wrong" username: try to delete all wrong usernames or at least give them other passwords.

Willy can probably say more about the recognition of hosts and why they seem to bind themselves to another BAM! userid then expected.

I'm not sure why you attach to a project, then the account manager--all you really need to do is attach to the account manager, and it will take care of managing the projects for you. That's sort of the point of an account manager.

You might try this:
1. Detach from the account manager on the machine you're having issues with
2. Log in to the BAM website using the "new" (wrong) account, and delete the host from the host list
3. Reattach to the account manager, using the old (right) account info
