Building A Parabolic WiFi Booster

This episode gives you a basic overview of how to build a Parabolic WiFi Booster that will increase you router's range as well as narrow the signal path for added security. I returned the template to TechAnvil.com!

Want to use your laptop anywhere in the neighborhood?

Our Goal:

Our goal is to use an exiting access point and without modifying the system build a wireless bridge that can make a one mile point to point link. We want to remain strictly legal and extend our range.

In order to accomplish this goal we will need to hit the following milestones:

1. Build an antenna enhancement which will not violate the integrity of our existing system.
2. Build a weather proof container for our AP.
3. Carry power to the AP without running AC to our roof top (a decidedly bad idea).
4. Move our AP out of the house and up onto the roof or side of the building where it has clear line of site to the other end of our link.

Move Your WiFi Access Point Outdoors? Here's How.

For someone with entirely too much time on their hands:

Parabolic WiFi Booster in Lego

I made this one inspired of TechAnvil, Love Lego

This really helped me out, Now I can surf just as good as having cable connected^^

PS: forgot to add the signal strength without the booster. It was 68% Signal, and 85% link quality.

Install a Wireless Repeater

For large houses or offices, a wireless repeater improves the strength of a signal to each computer. A repeater strengthens a laptop wireless connection when it is placed at the halfway mark between the router and the machine. The repeater takes a signal from the router, increases its strength and retransmits it to other areas of the home or office. This improves the signal so that laptops and other wireless machines on the network do not suffer from slow speeds due to signal degradation.

Tech Radar has an interesting article on how to boost your Wi-Fi's performance by using a 100mm diameter can. The guide stems from this post which offers complete instructions and diagrams on how to set up this can-based WLAN booster. Enthusiasts will simply need ten tools to get this DIY project up and running including a chassis N socket, an RG58 reverse polarity SMA male connector, a soldering iron, a drill, and more.

I love a good hack, especially one that requires me to throw back a cold one before hand (or during). This simple wifi boost has actually been shown to increase signal strength by at least 2 to 4 bars. And, well, I will drink to that.

These instructions came to us via The Chive and we think they are most definitely worth checking out. But here is the most important question: what kind of beer will you use?

For this project you are going to need scissors, a utility knife, some adhesive putty and an empty beer can. More than one empty beer can is acceptable but don’t kid yourself, the router only needs the one.
