The Javascript engine (V8) is really fast. I tried embedding it on a custom app and its API is quite clean and easy to use too.

Just a bit more improvement and it may become acceptable to write BOINC science apps in Javascript
Not running BOINC anymore for several reasons...

Google Announces Chrome Operating System

Ouch. Just as Microsoft was poised to continue its netbook dominance with Windows 7, Google announces an OS of its own, Google Chrome OS, which will run on both x86 and ARM systems.

The emphasis of the OS is the same as what netbooks were originally designed for: light, Web-based computing. Obviously, Windows XP wasn't designed for such a scenario, but its relative light weight, low cost, and familiarity have made it a big hit with netbook buyers.

"The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the Web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

Google's Chrome browser is shining brightly, and it's not hard to see why. First, the stats: According to the latest NetApplications figures, Chrome now has 6.7 percent of the browser market--a stunning rise from zero prior to 2009. Competing browsers are either treading water or, as in the case of Microsoft Internet Explorer, in precipitous freefall.

So what explains Chrome's sudden burst of popularity? Here are five reasons:

Google Set to Launch Chrome OS in Late Fall

Google reports that it intends to launch its operating system, dubbed Chrome OS, in the late fall of 2010.

Yahoo News quotes Google VP of product management Sundar Pichai as saying, "We are working on bringing the device later this fall." He continues stating, "It's something which we are very excited by ... We expect it to reach millions of users on day one."

Reuters quotes Pichai saying, "Chrome OS is one of the few future operating systems for which there are already millions of applications that work. You don't need to redesign Gmail for it to work on Chrome. Facebook does not need to write a new app for Chrome."

The real question for the Chrome OS is will hardware manufacturers support the OS. The OS will be open source and might woo some hardware makers to offer it on their netbooks, which is the market where Chrome OS is aimed.

Chrome update fixes vulnerabilities and activates Flash support

Google has released version 5.0.375.86 of its Chrome browser for Windows, Mac and Linux. The update fixes five vulnerabilities, three of which the developers classify as critical.

In this version of Chrome Google has also activated the built-in Flash Player, which was not included in the late May release of Chrome 5. Google integrated Flash support during the beta phase, but decided to wait for the final Flash Player version 10.1 for the stable version of Chrome 5. With the integrated Flash Player, users should always get the latest version of Flash Player when they download Chrome. Chrome silently downloads the latest version automatically, with no user interaction required.
