What is Distributed Hardware Evolution Project?
BOINC @ DHEP IS CURRENTLY IN BETA!
DHEP allows you to host an island running a Genetic Algorithm in a coevolutionary setting synthesising future super-reliable electronics such as those used in autonomous vehicles, power stations, medical equipment, aerospace. These are of increasingly paramount importance as more and more human lives rely on well functioning hardware.
Observation of population dynamics will also help us understand Evolution, not only to harness it to reach 'better than human' designs, but also to learn how migration rates, genetic diversity and the inner mechanisms of genetic recombination have concerted to reach the biodiversity and wonder of living organisms today.
DHEP is based at the University of Sussex.
My observations so far on the project:
1) Run the project at your own risk as it is barely out of ALFA testing. Things can break and/or change without notice.
2) Project is still in the VERY EARLY BETA TESTING STAGE with a few annoying problems that need to be worked out.
3) Project is NOT exporting stats, but is granting (very high) BOINC credits on it's web site.
4) Tasks run "forever" and will be running in EDF (Earliest Deadline First) aka "PANIC MODE".
5) Tasks take up a full thread running a Java based applet that needs a window open to do its calculations. You can
minimize the open windows but if you
close the window, the task crashes and ends.
6) The Java applet can make some computers sluggish to respond to mouse click and/or keystrokes.
7) Active task(s) send a trickle-up message every 15 minutes to the project server.
