I stopped by my WCG account last night... I found it cool that they have the setup to initiate / participate in short term / longer term team challenges...

Do any other projects do this?

It was discussed on BOINC mailing list, and conclusion was it would be better as an independent service, not as code added to every project.
Not running BOINC anymore for several reasons...

generally speaking, the teams will create their own challenges between each other.
